Runway Pricing: Plans, Credits & Cost Per Second (2026)

FairStack Team February 13, 2026

Reading time: 8 minutes Last updated: February 2026

Runway charges 5 credits per second for Gen-4 Turbo video. Each credit costs $0.01 on the API. That means a 5-second clip costs $0.25 in raw credits — before you factor in the subscription you already paid to get those credits. Most users never do this math. We did.

This is a complete breakdown of Runway pricing in 2026 — every plan, every model tier, and the actual dollar-per-second cost at each subscription level. We also compare those numbers against transparent per-generation pricing, where you pay a flat rate per clip with no subscription required.

Key Findings

  • Runway’s Standard plan ($12/mo annual) gives you 625 credits — enough for 125 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo or just 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video per month.
  • The effective cost per second of Gen-4 Turbo on the Standard plan is $0.096/sec when you amortize the subscription across all credits ($12 / 625 credits x 5 credits/sec).
  • FairStack offers Runway’s own Gen-4 Turbo at $0.072 per 5-second clip — 77% cheaper per clip than Runway Pro’s effective rate of $0.31 per 5-second clip.
  • Runway credits expire monthly. FairStack credits never expire.

Every plan above the Free tier removes watermarks. The Unlimited plan adds “relaxed mode” — unlimited generations at slower processing speeds, plus 2,250 priority credits for faster rendering.

Free Plan: What You Get (and What You Don’t)

Runway’s Free plan provides 125 credits total — not per month. That is 25 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo video or roughly 10 seconds of Gen-4.5. After those credits are gone, the only option is a paid subscription. There is no way to buy individual credits without subscribing.

What the Free plan includes:

  • Gen-4 Turbo access
  • 3 video projects maximum
  • 5GB asset storage
  • Watermarks on all output

What it lacks: commercial usage rights, custom voice creation, team features, and any form of credit renewal.

Standard Plan ($12/month)

The Standard plan is the entry point for serious use. At $12/month (annual billing), you receive 625 credits that reset every billing cycle. Unused credits expire.

What 625 credits buys you:

ModelCredits/secSeconds of videoMinutes
Gen-4 Turbo5125 sec2.1 min
Gen-4.51252 sec0.9 min
Gen-3 Turbo5125 sec2.1 min

Two minutes of Gen-4 Turbo video per month. If your usage exceeds that, you have two choices: upgrade to Pro, or stop generating until next month. There is no option to purchase additional credits at the Standard tier.

Pro Plan ($28/month)

The Pro plan is Runway’s most popular tier for individual creators. At $28/month (annual), you receive 2,250 credits monthly.

What 2,250 credits buys you:

ModelCredits/secSeconds of videoMinutes
Gen-4 Turbo5450 sec7.5 min
Gen-4.512187 sec3.1 min
Gen-3 Turbo5450 sec7.5 min

At 7.5 minutes of Gen-4 Turbo output per month, the Pro plan works for moderate creators. But 7.5 minutes disappears fast when you factor in iterations — most video generation requires 3-5 attempts to get the right result. That reduces your usable output to roughly 1.5-2.5 minutes of final video.

Pro also unlocks custom voice creation and 500GB storage.

Unlimited Plan ($76/month)

The Unlimited plan includes 2,250 priority credits (same as Pro) plus unlimited “relaxed mode” generations. Relaxed mode runs on lower-priority compute, which means longer wait times — sometimes 2-5x slower than priority rendering.

This plan makes sense if you generate high volumes and can tolerate slower speeds for most of your work, reserving priority credits for final renders.

Runway API Pricing

Runway’s API uses the same credit system at $0.01 per credit, purchased separately from subscriptions. API credits do not count toward or draw from subscription allocations.

ModelCredits/secCost/sec (API)
Gen-4 Turbo5$0.05
Gen-4.512$0.12
Gen-4 Aleph15$0.15
Veo 3.1 (with audio)40$0.40
Veo 3.1 Fast (no audio)10$0.10

API pricing is straightforward — but it only applies to API usage. Subscription users still consume their monthly credit pool in the web interface.

What Does Each Second of Runway Video Actually Cost?

The Credit Math

The headline credit costs mask the total cost of using Runway. When you pay $28/month for 2,250 credits, each credit is not free — it cost you $0.0124 ($28 / 2,250). The per-second cost is that amortized credit cost plus the credit consumption rate.

Effective cost per second by plan (Gen-4 Turbo, 5 credits/sec):

PlanSubscription/moCreditsCost per creditCredits/secEffective $/sec
Standard (annual)$12625$0.01925$0.096
Pro (annual)$282,250$0.01245$0.062
Unlimited (annual)$762,250*$0.03385$0.169
API (no sub)$0Pay-as-you-go$0.01005$0.050

*Unlimited plan’s 2,250 credits are for priority rendering only. Relaxed mode generations are additional but slower.

The Unlimited plan’s effective cost per priority credit is the highest because you pay $76 for the same 2,250 priority credits. The value proposition is the unlimited relaxed-mode generations — but those come with processing delays.

Gen-4 Turbo vs Gen-4.5: Cost Difference

Gen-4.5 consumes 12 credits per second — 2.4x more than Gen-4 Turbo. On the Pro plan:

  • Gen-4 Turbo: $0.062/sec, 7.5 minutes of output
  • Gen-4.5: $0.149/sec, 3.1 minutes of output

Gen-4.5 delivers higher fidelity, but at the Pro tier, using it cuts your monthly output from 7.5 minutes to just over 3 minutes. Every generation attempt on Gen-4.5 costs $0.74 for a 5-second clip.

Runway vs Pay-Per-Second Pricing: The FairStack Comparison

Runway bundles subscriptions with credits with model-specific burn rates. FairStack takes a different approach: you pay a flat rate per generation with no subscription required. Every receipt shows the infrastructure cost plus a fixed 20% platform fee.

Why the Price Difference Exists

Runway operates a subscription business. Subscription revenue funds engineering, marketing, and infrastructure — which means credit costs must cover more than raw compute. FairStack operates on cost-plus pricing where the only addition is a transparent 20% platform fee.

The trade-off: Runway offers advanced editing tools that FairStack does not — motion brush, camera control, inpainting, and a polished creative studio. If you use those tools, Runway’s subscription includes significant workflow value beyond raw video generation. If you primarily generate video from text or image prompts, per-generation pricing eliminates the subscription overhead.

FAQ: Runway Pricing Questions

How much does Runway cost per video?

A 5-second Gen-4 Turbo video costs 25 credits. On the API, that is $0.25. On the Pro plan (annual), the effective cost is $0.31 when you include the subscription fee. Gen-4.5 costs $0.60 per 5-second clip on the API.

Is Runway free?

Runway offers a Free plan with 125 one-time credits. That generates roughly 25 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo video total, with watermarks. After the credits are used, a paid subscription is required. There is no credit renewal on the Free plan.

How many credits does Runway give you?

The Standard plan provides 625 credits/month, Pro provides 2,250 credits/month, and Unlimited provides 2,250 priority credits plus unlimited relaxed-mode generations. Credits expire at the end of each billing cycle.

Do Runway credits roll over?

No. Unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. There is no rollover across months.

Can I buy Runway credits without a subscription?

Only through the API developer portal, where credits cost $0.01 each. The web interface requires a subscription plan to access generation features.

Calculate Your Real Video Costs

The credit-per-second model makes it difficult to predict your actual monthly spend. Run the numbers before committing:

  1. Estimate your monthly video output in seconds (include iterations — multiply final output by 3-5x)
  2. Choose your primary model (Gen-4 Turbo at 5 credits/sec, or Gen-4.5 at 12 credits/sec)
  3. Multiply seconds x credits/sec = total credits needed
  4. Compare that to each plan’s credit allocation

If your total exceeds 2,250 credits, you are either upgrading to Unlimited or overpaying.
